Can data be recovered from a clicking hard drive?

Often, but the drive should be powered off immediately. Clicking can indicate unstable heads, firmware problems or media access failure, and continued operation may worsen the damage.

Should I run CHKDSK or recovery software?

Not on an unstable or physically failing drive. Repair utilities write to the source and can make later reconstruction harder. Software is appropriate only after the failure has been identified as safely logical.

Can you recover an external USB hard drive?

Yes. The enclosure, USB bridge, power supply, internal drive and filesystem are assessed separately to identify the real point of failure.

How long does evaluation take?
